The victorious new coalition in Bihar will hopefully set an example for India by choosing renewable energy (RE) as a solution for the future. The JD(U) has in fact promised 988 MW of RE, which is more than the current installed capacity of coal.
Greenpeace’s Urja Kranti Yatra, travelled over 1800 km across Bihar highlighting the benefits of decentralised renewable energy (DRE) in the state. In the end, villages with a population of over 30 lakh people pledged support to RE and four major political parties, including the victorious ones, promised RE in their manifestos.
We cannot stop till we get the new government to deliver its promise. The energy revolution is starting in Bihar and the state can show the renewable way to the entire country. This will involve a months or years of campaigning, pushing the Bihar government to fulfil its promise. All this will require financial support.
By making a financial contribution you will help further the fight for
saving our planet. Greenpeace values its independence and doesn’t take any financial aid from government bodies or corporates.
Individual contributions made by people like you help continue this work for the environment.
DRE involves generating RE near the consumer instead of transferring it through centralised grid. This system cuts down on the amount of power wasted through the centralised distribution method and reduces carbon emissions, provides control of resources to communities.
Years of campaigning result in victories like the moratorium on genetically modified Bt Brinjal or ensuring a nuclear liability bill which secures that operators and suppliers of nuclear installations are held accountable for the associated risks as well. The work in Bihar is the one of the first steps in the campaign for renewable energy, and there is a long way to go. The distance can be covered with your help.
